As humans, we tend to do things for a reason. We tend to believe that everything exists for a certain purpose. The term, “everything happens for a reason” is our mantra and we expect all things, including ourselves, to fulfil a duty. A duty that is the sole purpose for living. With that comes the biggest question we try our lives to answer; “What’s your purpose in life?”
I’m not here to answer that question for you because answering that question isn’t utterly important. I’m here to show you how to live your life’s purpose. It doesn’t matter so much what your purpose in life is but more so if you’re living it. That’s the thing that counts. So, are you living your life’s purpose? It’s a yes or no question but it can sometimes be difficult to tell if you don’t know how to do it because if you don’t know how to do it then you’re probably not doing it.
You know you’re living your life’s purpose when you’re doing something that comes naturally to you. Because the thing is this, our only sole purpose in this life is to exist. Nothing more, nothing less. Existing entails doing what comes from the heart, doing what comes naturally to you, doing something with ease, doing without thinking about it. We’ve been doing that since the second we were born. Nobody taught us how to suck but when our mother’s breast was stuffed into our face we knew what to do and we drank the milk. Nobody taught us how to crawl, walk, talk, or relieve ourselves but we did it because it came naturally. Nobody taught us anything until we were old enough to be taught. Then we were taught what to eat, what to believe, and how to go about “living our best lives”. We essentially started living other people’s lives as opposed to our own. We let ourselves be influenced. Nobody is to blame because we were born into the system and most of us don’t know any better. However, the system works, often times, unlike the natural way of our own personal existence.
Most importantly, the system has led us to believe that we have a reason for existing other than to just be. In a way, it is true; you do have a definitive life purpose other than purely existing. You know, it’s the answer to the famous question, “What is your purpose in life?” But we often times get so lost in trying to find the answer that we forget the core, and the core is everything. Understanding the core and doing it is the only way you will be able to find the answer.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, your natural self is your best self, because God does not make mistakes. Hence, once you start doing what comes naturally to you, you start to live your best life, and once you’re living your best life, well fam, there’s nothing you can’t do. There’s power in being your natural self because there’s power in being honest, raw, and true. What’s more, the great thing about this power is that society recognises it and puts you in a position where you can go about living your best life in a way that benefits everyone and that is where you discover your purpose for society. That purpose for society is that life purpose we so desperately try to find and understand- the answer to that famous question.
With that, we can say that we have two life purposes. The first being the most basic: to purely exist, and the second being the purpose we have for the benefit of society: the answer to the age old question. To find the latter, we must first do the former and that is to not think, just do. Do you want to focus on your music or do you want to go to university and become an accountant? Do you want to study law or do you really want to study marketing? Do you want to study finance because you enjoy maths or because you know it makes you money? What do you want to do? Don’t think too hard about it. Don’t think about the hows and the whys. Don’t think about how it’s going to affect others or how you’re going to actually do it because that shit will sort itself out. The first step is to do. You don’t even need to have a solid idea to do it you should just do what comes naturally.
Take Steve Jobs for example. He dropped out of university and started working on his first computer. From there he started the Apple Company and now Apple is one of the leading giants in the world of IT. We have every reason to assume that he was told to go to university regardless of whether or not he actually wanted to because in our society going to university is an action we are expected to take after graduating high school. The standard procedure to go about living life is to go to school, get a degree, get a job, get married, start a family, keep that job, and die. Therefore, it is safe to say that Steve Jobs was following that protocol when he applied to university. However, once he stopped drinking society’s “kool-aid” and he started doing what came naturally to him (building computers and shit), he found his power. He became the visionary and revolutionary that we will always admire, even after his death, because he did what came naturally to him. Nobody told him to drop out of university and build computers but he did it. From there he began to fulfil his life’s purpose and subsequently society’s purpose. Once you begin to truly live, you start to do things without thinking about it, you just do, and once you start doing that you start to do amazing things because you’ve found your power. That power is you.
So, you know you’re living the life you’re meant to be when whatever you do comes naturally to you. When you’re following your intuition and doing things with ease, almost automatically. You don’t need to know what your purpose for society is, you just need to live your life’s purpose, you just need to exist. Personally, I have no idea what I want to do in the grander scheme of things. I haven’t found my purpose for society, but I find myself writing, cooking, and photographing. I’m doing these things without anybody telling to do it, I’m just existing. Not only am I slowly seeing positive results but I am happy doing it. That’s the great thing about doing things that come naturally to you, you become happy. You become happy because you are in tune with your heart and yourself. You become happy because you’re living your life’s purpose.
Life should not have to be a struggle. When people tell you to follow your heart, they’re not lying. That’s genuinely the best and only thing you can do, so do what comes naturally to you and follow your heart. Then you know you’re living the life you’re meant to live. Whatever the fuck that happens to be.
